Dr Bronwyn Campbell

I have been a GP since 1992 and have worked in both urban and rural practices

I became interested in the things that weren’t readily explained by the medical model after I had been in practice for about 10 years. Some of these things are referred to as medically unexplained symptoms. Sometimes medicine does have an explanation and an agreed treatment plan for a problem but it doesn’t seem to quite go far enough. I was noticing that the life experiences of patients had more relevance to their health than I had been taught.

I completed a postgraduate diploma in MindBody medicine in 2009 -this reinforced and expanded my understanding of the intimate connections between our health (or ill-health) and our life experiences. Since then, the work on the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences has been published and we have learned more about the long- reaching impact of what happens to us as children.

My interest in the well-being of doctors began after I experienced an episode of burn-out while working in an isolated rural practice in my 30s. This interest has grown since I started working in medical education in 2010.

Currently I work as a school doctor and I facilitate the weekly seminars for first year GP registrars in Hamilton.

I have been providing professional support since I completed the postgrad papers in Professional Supervision through Wintec in 2019.

I am blessed to have such a variety of work that I love.

Growing flowers to enjoy in the garden and in my home helps me to lose track of time. I live on a small lifestyle block near Te Kuiti with my partner who is a builder and our dog, cat (the boss), a variable number of chickens and a few steers. I have two daughters who make me proud - being with them is the definition of quality time.
